(4/4/2022) Police shooting and killing of PATRICK LYOYA
In 2014, Patrick Lyoya and his family arrived in the United States as refugees after spending 10 years in a refugee camp.
On April 4th in Michigan, Patrick Lyoya (26) was shot in the back of the head during a confrontation with a police officer. The killing took place during a traffic stop and autopsy results suggest that the gun was held directly to Lyoya’s head before he was “executed”.
Police-cam footage reveals a struggle between Lyoya and the officer after being asked to show his license. The officer was able to restrain Lyoya and maintain control of the situation. The following shooting of Patrick Lyoya once again portrays the lack of accountability held to police officers in confrontations with people of color. Protests followed the shooting as Michigan residents continue to stand against these continual injustices.
Lyoya’s death has raised government consideration of revising traffic-stop laws and inspired days of protests in his name.
